Empowering young people and youth organizations to actively engage in climate education and climate change mitigation is essential for building a sustainable and climate-resilient future. However, youth are often seen as passive recipients of environmental information, and their involvement in meaningful climate action is still limited. Non-formal education approaches, which could bridge this gap, are not yet widely used in climate-related initiatives targeting young people.

The project Sustainaware addresses this challenge by providing youth workers and young people with the tools, knowledge, and platforms to better understand climate change and take action. It promotes climate literacy through non-formal learning formats and encourages behavior change, active citizenship, and youth-led advocacy for sustainability.

Main goals:

  • Non-formal education for climate literacy: Sustainaware promotes accessible, practical learning formats that go beyond traditional education systems.

  • Youth-centered tools and content: Launched Digital Escape Room is an interesting way of learning about climate change

  • Participatory events:  15 Youth Tecnical Advisory Board members attended 6 Capacity Building events, Climate Summit and cocreated Digital Escape Room

  • Youth engagement in advocacy: The International Youth Climate Summit results in a youth declaration calling for stronger climate action.

  • Digital and social media outreach: Project tools and events are promoted online to maximize accessibility and youth participation.
